There are some remains from the Prehistory, as cavern paints and stone materials in the mountain ranges of the township. They make us think that these lands were already inhabited in those ages. The village has probably an Arabian origin, because the name derives from the name "Alfahar" which means "pottery". This can explain that there could have been a set of inhabitants who worked with the mud. In 1480 Alfara welcame the inhabitants of Carles, which was six km. far from Alfara. The inhabited place of Carles (which had been known as Castles) appears in a document from 1148 that talks about the services it lended in the Reconquest. In 1237 Ramon de Setmenat gave the "Carta de Pobación" (a population permit) of the place of Carles, which had been governed by the "Constitucions de Cathalunya o per Usatges de Barchinona". In 1479 Carles suffered a strong epidemy, and the survivors left the village and went to Alfara. This is why Alfara changed its name into "Alfara de Carles". In the beginning of the 15th.century, Elionor de Fluvià, the widow of Pere de Setmenat (the third with this name) inherited the village and the Castle of Carles, but as she did not have any children, she sold her ownships to the city of Tortosa. Therefore, the Barony of Alfara and Carles started its relationship with Tortosa and the laws that started to be imposed were the ones of "El Llibre de Costums". In the 16th.century the Barony of Alfara and Carles was owned by the priest Cristòfol Despuig, who is the author of the famous "Col.loquis" written in 1557. In the 19th.century, the population experienced a big demographic increase due to the exsistence of important industries of paper, glass and textiles in the Toscà area, which made good use of the abundant water that is in it. |

The "Fiesta Mayor" of Alfara is celebrated in the day of Sant Agustí. There are many typical activities, in which we mention the distribution of the "panoli", the bullocks and the procession.
